What's going on with Californians referencing Bakersfield with so much negativity?
Main Post:
I've heard many times people complaining about the issues presented in their areas in California make jokes about "at least I'm not in Bakersfield". As a Californian transplant I've never been to Bakersfield and have wondered about this. Could it really be that bad? I mean where I live has unaffordable costs of living and significant crime issues but people don't jest about it the same.
Thanks in advance.

So the cliff notes are that people who are living pay check to pay check on the coasts are now moving to cheaper areas because they’re getting sick of it.
This is just personal experience but what always cracks me up is that the people who I know who have made the move to a Bakersfield or Fresno still end up living above their means lol it’s just they buy a 100k truck, a 5 bedroom house for their 3 person family over going to out for $300 meals/drinks, concerts and sporting events every weekend.
As the guy in the article literally says “it may be hotter, but now I have a pool”. Most people still end up spending what they make, just in a different way. Just depends on what you want in life.

Nice. Some great recreational opportunities around Bakersfield for sure. Santa Barbara, Morro Bay or Lone Pine are all about 2.5 hours away for weekending, or the desert in eastern Kern Co, Lake Isabella, the Kern, etc.
If they just didn't have that air....
Any tips for new delivery and rideshare driver in Bakersfield?
Main Post:
Been out of job for several months, and desperately needed something right away to support a family of 4. So, I just recently applied and got approved for delivery with Doordash and UberEats. Also, signed up for Uber and Lyft driving. I am trying all of them but so far Doordash seems to be paying the most per mile, but I get about 3-4 pickups and deliveries a day. I pick up anything that pays at least $1.5 per mile. But with UberEats, got my first ping for pickup only today, after more than 9 days of waiting while driving with Uber and Lyft. The pay for driving passengers is the worst around here. I get approx. $0.63 per mile and more than 90% of the riders do not tip.
Am I doing something wrong or is it just a bad time for delivery and driving here in Bakersfield? I usually wait around Walmart on Rosedale, and like to stick to the west side, but Uber and Lyft have taken me to some of the crappiest parts of the city, where I've felt somewhat unsafe after dark, but I was desperate was trying to take most ride requests that paid more than $5. Only yesterday, two guys with a dog requested a Lyft ride worth about $6 in a sketchy and dark location at a deadend around some kind of factory or warehouse. I picked them up, greeted them and was being very nice, and in the middle of the ride, they cancelled the ride which the app did not notify. I dropped them off at the destination, and ended the ride on the app. When I checked my earning right after, I see "rider cancelled the ride a minute after pickup. What the heck? It was only $6, but I felt completely cheated. Contacted Lyft support and they issued $2 bonus.
With all these deliveries and rides, I'm barely making $60-$80 in about 6 hours, not to mention, I need to deduct gas money on that. Am I supposed to accept all rides + deliveries even if the pay is really bad and less than $5? Some ride requests pay really really bad. For example - $5 for 6-10 miles and taking over 25 minutes without any surge, and extremely low chances of tips. Only last night, after 7 hours on the road, I made about $65. I was so desperate, I took a Lyft request to drive 22miles west to Frito Lays factory at 10:30pm, and drove back home 16 miles without any passenger, all for $16. Then I made a total of $81 in almost 8 hours.
Any tips and suggestions on when, where and how to earn a bit more and in a safer way, are highly appreciated.
